Trance Surgery in Brazil

This presentation covers the results of field work in Brazil on healer-mediums who perform crude forms of surgery, often employing sharp instruments. We found that these healer-mediums are in a brain state of hyperaroused trance, and so we have termed this practice "trance surgery." Our research was conducted at widely scattered sites throughout Brazil over a six year period. We observed several thousand patients being treated by nine trance surgeons and we videotaped several hundred of these cases. In addition to background information and our own observational material, this presentation includes two medical case reports, physiological data gathered from healers and patients, and results of a pathologist's examination of a surgically excised tumor. The most clear cut conclusion I can report at this time is that despite the lack of sterile procedures and anesthesia, I know of only two or three cases of infection, shock, or death resulting from these extraordinary practices. Pain is often absent. The cases I will present here, plus others we have followed, suggest that trance surgery sometimes heals serious illness that is not likely to improve without treatment. My colleague and I conclude that in trance surgery it is more than an attitude or a belief, conscious or unconscious, that is transferred from the healer-medium to the patient. Follow up work is clearly needed to elucidate and extend these findings.

Narrative Medicine: Bridging Shamanism and Aboriginal Healing with Conventional Medicine

Aboriginal healers (sometimes called shamans) have very different ways of understanding health and disease from their biomedical counterparts. Each person is unique and has his or her own story that explains his health or illness. These stories involve relationships at all levels of existence (including spirit and other people) and provide clues on how to heal. The developing perspective of narrative medicine has this same emphasis - that the stories patients tell are often more important than the specific diagnosis.
